Grey Area: Gorgeous Neutral Dresses in Shades of Grey
I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve been going grey. No, not literally… just when it comes to fashion. And can you blame me? If you ask me, grey is the new black. It goes with everything and is the perfect neutral shade when you’re tired of all the black, brown, and beige in your closet. Grey is a super flattering and often under-appreciated shades in the color spectrum. Best of all, the color lends itself to different hues and moods – from soft dove grey all the way to metallic silver to darker charcoal greys and everything in between. So in the spirit of all things grey, my post today will be about some of the cutest grey dresses (and clothes) that are perfect updates to your wardrobe.
Grey Strapless Formal
Fashionista Barbie did an article on the striking floor-length Alexander McQueen gown Kate Bosworth wore. She wore this formal number to the 3rd annual Art of Elysium ‘Heaven Gala’ in Beverly Hills. One thing I love about grey is that while it is neutral and understated, it is still super flattering and manages to stand out in the crowd of black dresses. Grey is like the lighter, more ethereal cousin to black. Although this dress would cost thousands, here is a similar look for less:
This lovely grey maxi is drop-dead gorgeous and is perfect for any formal event such as prom. Technically this one is designed as a bridesmaid dress- and I think it is perfect for a formal or black tie wedding. But, like all the best clothing out there, this one can adapt to just about any elegant function. The soft draped fabric extends all the way from the ruched sweetheart neckline down its full voluminous skirt. What this creates is a glamorous feminine effect fit for a goddess. Also available in Plum Purple.
50 Shades of Grey
Grey can be simple and understated, but it can also be fun and lively as well. Take this grey watercolor floral print maxi dress for example. Hints of white, grey and purple fuse together in this stunning maxi dress to breathtaking effect. Like its name, this gown plays host to a myriad of pastel flowers all over its delicate chiffon length. The bust area is made to enhance the décolletage with its tailored design and deep V-neckline. Then comes a slim-fitting belt to nip the body right at its smallest part. The overall aesthetic is one of serene elegance. I can see this being worn as a unique bridesmaid dress. The recent trend for bridesmaids has been to mix prints with solids and I can totally see having some of your ladies wearing this printed grey dress while others wear solid grey maxi dresses or even pale purples. The look would be drop dead gorgeous!
You may think of grey as being neutral, flat, and monotone- but Selena Gomez proves that it is anything but boring when the color grey is paired with bold beading and embellishments. She wore this lovely pale grey chiffon Marchesa gown to the 61st Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Bold beading at the neckline, bust, and waist adds the perfect touch of sparkle to this elegant look, and the pale grey fabric is neutral and chic but manages to look lighter and more ethereal than a darker fabric such as black. Of course, a Marchesa gown would cost thousands, but luckily you can find similar styles for much less:
This bold beaded grey maxi dress is a steal at just $84. This is a perfect way to get the Selena Gomez style at a fraction of the price. I can see this dress being worn to prom or any formal event paired with delicate silver earrings and a clutch purse. Another option I can see for this dress is as a unique bridesmaid dress. Over the last several years, bold beading and embellishments have been spotted at so many formal weddings. That glam Roaring 20s/Great Gatsby look is one of the more popular wedding themes. Grey is a lovely choice for bridesmaid dresses that will keep the look classy and understated with the beading adding the perfect touch of glamour.
Luscious in Lavender Grey
While we’re on the theme of grey embellished dresses, consider this lovely lavender grey maxi dress. Stunning two-tone color? Check. Fitted, flattering design? Check. Unmatched tailored and quality? Check. This elegant maxi dress is all about unabashed all-out glamour. Only, instead of a brazen, in-your-face color like red or gold, the shade of choice is much softer, simpler and sophisticated. Lavender grey is the ideal match for the flowing fabric of the maxi skirt while a more metallic sheen on top adds some gentle sparkle. What you’re left with is a sure-fire winner at any wedding, cocktail event or gala dinner. Grey dresses for the win, we say!
Maybe you want to wear grey, but you’re looking for something a little more fun and festive? Add some shimmer to your look by wearing a grey dress with a metallic sheen. This Herve Leger dress comes in a grey color with a metallic shimmer to the fabric. It has a classic A-line cut that is super flattering. Pair it with metallic strappy heels and silver jewelry to get that Hollywood look.
Here is a similar look at a fraction of the price. Are you somewhat of a disco diva? Maybe there’s a fun bachelorette party on the cards or a fun ladies night with your best friends? This Pearls and Stripes party dress is the perfect pick to razzle dazzle the night away. Who says grey has to be monotone and boring? One of the best ways to wear grey is in metallic or silvery shades of grey. This strapless number fits snugly against the bust and cascades down into an A-line skirt. But the real coup d’état happens on the waistline. A string of pearls sits stylishly on the waistline for an unexpectedly ladylike addition. Prim and proper just got a fashionable upgrade!
Lady in Lavender Grey
Here we have a party frock that takes fun and flirty to a whole new height. We’d even go so far as to call it a wardrobe staple! The shape is reminiscent of a wrap dress only much, much sexier – this dress is designed to show off the merits of the female form. The soft chiffon fabric almost dances across the body, tied at the shoulders and fitted at the midriff. Wear this striking number to anything from a night with your girlfriends to a promising first date.
